Traveling really takes a toll on your body. You’re out of your routine, and it can really mess things up. For someone like me, with immune system issues and trouble staying healthy to begin with, getting sick on vacation is quite common. I’ve developed some tips to help you stay healthy while traveling.
Keep Your Routine as Much as Possible
For me, keeping a distinct routine is one of the only things that keeps me healthy. I wake up, work out, eat breakfast, shower, etc. If I try to keep that routine in check even while traveling, it can make things a lot easier. Even if I’m not following 100% of my routine, keeping it together as much as possible is key.
Take Vitamins & Eat Well
Vitamins are essential while traveling. It’s a good idea to carry your typical multivitamin, but taking some airborne or vitamin C while traveling is a great idea. Eating well will also provide you with the nutrition you need to keep going and stay healthy. Although it’s tempting to gorge yourself on all the pasta and cannolis in Italy, try to incorporate at least a couple healthy meals or snacks throughout your day. By all means throw yourself into the culture, but try and do it in a healthy way.
Wash Your Hands & Carry Hand Sanitizer
It’s a great idea to keep your hands clean all the time, but especially when traveling. Wash your hands at every opportunity and carry a travel sized hand sanitizer to use when you don’t have access to a restroom. You’ll be touching all sorts of grimy surfaces, so making sure you are keeping your hands clean is a great way to avoid germs.
Let Yourself Rest
A great recipe for sickness is making yourself go too hard all the time. Your body needs time to rest, so allowing it to rest and not trying to go, go, go will make things easier. Let yourself sleep a regular amount of time, and if you’re feeling tired mid-day, go back to the hostel/hotel and take a nap. Don’t push yourself all the time.
